3 Tips for Setting Your Fitness New Year’s Resolutions

If you’re like most people, you’re probably getting ready to set some New Year’s resolutions for the coming year. Now is the time most individuals take stock of their current life and identify what changes they want to make in the months ahead.

Sadly, often these resolutions are not maintained however, and fall by the wayside a few weeks into January. By taking some time to set smarter New Year’s resolutions though, you can put your best foot forward to actually achieving them this time around.

Here’s what to consider.

Be Realistic

First up, while it may be tempting to set some type of aggressive goal (lose 30 pounds, build 20 pounds of sheer muscle, rid your diet of processed foods entirely, etc), chances are slim that you will actually obtain this – in fact, in many cases, these goals aren’t even physically possible.

By looking at what you achieved last year (if you did follow through with your past resolutions) you can gauge what will be possible for this year.

Set Smaller Goals Rather Than One Large One

Next up, you might want to consider setting a few smaller goals rather than one large one. This allows you to get a greater sense of accomplishment as you reach each one.

Furthermore, by having these smaller goals it should help you stay focused better since you can actually picture reaching your goal.

When you have such a big goal and it’s so far into the future, it could be harder to keep on track since you may not see the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’.

Re-Evaluate As You Go

You’ll also want to keep in mind that as you go through the year, you will likely have to re-evaluate your goals slightly. You might find that your focus changes halfway through the New Year as to what you actually want to do depending on the progress you are making and other various things that could be going on in your life.

As such, re-evaluating your goals on a continual basis to update them and make sure they are current is important.

So, keep these points in mind. There is no point in setting goals that are going to be out of your reach in the first place, as that will just set you up for failure. By being more conservative to start and then re-evaluating your progress as you go you can help avoid this problem and see much better overall results.
